Akumal is a small town — you can walk from one end to the other in fifteen minutes — but the food scene is anything but small. La Buena Vida
The most photographed restaurant in Akumal — sand floors, driftwood chandeliers, and swing seats at the bar looking straight over Half Moon Bay. The menu is coastal Mexican done well: whole grilled snapper, ceviche mixto, coconut shrimp, strong margaritas. Reserve for sunset on weekends. Roughly $30–45 USD per person with drinks.
Lol-Ha
Akumal's original beach restaurant, opened in 1968 and still run by the same family. A giant palapa sits directly on Akumal Bay, feet from the sand where guests snorkel with sea turtles in the morning. Order the Yucatecan classics — cochinita pibil, sopa de lima, pescado tikin xic — and stay for live music on the beach in high season. Around $25–40 USD per person.
Turtle Bay Café & Bakery
The unofficial living room of Akumal, tucked just inland from Akumal Bay. All-day breakfasts (huevos motuleños, chilaquiles, proper eggs benedict), fresh-baked pastries, real espresso, a full vegan and vegetarian menu, and free Wi-Fi that actually works. This is where locals, expats and travelers overlap. Cash and card, ~$10–18 USD per person.
La Cueva del Pescador
A local institution just off the main Akumal road — no beach views, just genuinely great, affordable seafood. Whole fried fish, garlic shrimp, aguachile, and the best fish tacos in town. Order at the counter, sit under the palapa, expect a little wait when it's busy. Cash preferred. ~$12–20 USD per person.
Kay Beach Club
The polished newcomer on the Akumal coastline — day-bed service, a swim-up pool bar, chef-driven small plates and the best sunset cocktail list in town. Reservations recommended; minimum consumption applies for day beds. Great for a celebratory dinner or a slow afternoon after snorkeling. ~$35–55 USD per person with drinks.
Casual eats & tacos
Cross Highway 307 into Akumal Pueblo for the most authentic — and cheapest — food in town. A short list of reliable favorites:
- Taquería Lonchería El Amigo Miguel — al pastor and cochinita tacos, open late.
- Taquería La Lomita — grilled arrachera tacos and generous quesadillas.
- Antojitos La Chiapaneca — panuchos, salbutes and horchata for under $6.
- Imelda Ecocina (Akumal side) — huge Mexican breakfasts and lunch specials.

Groceries & self-catering
Every PPIM rental has a full kitchen, so many guests do a grocery run on day one. The Chedraui supermarket in Playa del Carmen (30 min north) and Super Aki in Tulum (25 min south) have the widest selection. In town, the Super San Francisco on the pueblo side of the highway covers basics, and the little fruit and tortilla stands along the main road are excellent for daily produce, fresh tortillas and cold coconuts.
