Best Time to Visit Akumal, Mexico: A Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

"When should we come?" is the second-most-common question we get, right after "Is it safe?" Akumal is a year-round destination — the water is always warm, the turtles never leave, and the sun almost always shines — but the difference between a February morning and a September afternoon is bigger than most travelers expect. This is our honest, month-by-month guide from a family that lives here year-round at PPIM Vacation Rentals.
The quick answer
If we could pick two windows for a first-time Akumal trip, they would be late November through early December and mid-January through early March. You get bluebird skies, low humidity, calm water, minimal sargassum, and prices that haven't yet spiked to Christmas or Spring Break levels. If your priority is the lowest possible price, early May or early October can be a steal — you just accept some weather roulette.
Weather year-round
Akumal sits in a tropical climate about 100 km south of Cancun. Daytime highs stay between 82°F (28°C) and 92°F (33°C) almost every day of the year, and the sea temperature rarely drops below 78°F (26°C). The real variables are humidity, rainfall and wind — not temperature.
- Dry season (November – April): low humidity, cooler mornings, almost no rain, deep-blue seas.
- Wet season (May – October): higher humidity, short afternoon thunderstorms, warmer nights, greener jungle.
- "Nortes" (December – February): occasional cool north winds; expect a few overcast, breezy days per month.
High, shoulder and low season
- Peak season: Christmas/New Year (Dec 20 – Jan 5), Presidents' Day week and Spring Break (mid-February – mid-April), and Easter/Semana Santa.
- High season: the rest of December, January, February and March.
- Shoulder: mid-April – mid-June and mid-October – mid-November.
- Low season: late June – September, plus the first week or two of October.
Best time to see sea turtles
Akumal literally means "place of the turtles" in Mayan. Green sea turtles graze in the bay's seagrass beds every single day of the year. For the clearest, calmest snorkeling conditions, November through April is unbeatable. Visibility is often 15–20 meters, and the sargassum-free surface makes spotting turtles from a paddleboard easy.

Sargassum season, honestly
Sargassum is a floating brown seaweed that drifts across the Atlantic and washes up on Caribbean beaches. It is the single biggest weather variable on the Riviera Maya. Here's the pattern we've seen over the last several years:
- Nov – Mar: almost none. Beaches look like a postcard.
- April: unpredictable — some years clear, some years the first pulses arrive.
- May – Aug: peak sargassum months. Bad days are bad; good days still happen.
- September: tapering, but still likely.
- October: generally clearing by mid-month.
Local tip
Akumal's protected bay handles sargassum better than open beaches in Tulum. Even in a bad week, the western end near Lol-Ha and the Santamar by TAO beach access are usually swimmable. Cenote days (Cenote Azul, Yal-Ku, Xel-Há) are our go-to backup when the ocean is heavy.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 – November 30, but the statistical peak for the Yucatan is September and October. Direct hits on the Riviera Maya are rare — a few per decade — but tropical storms, heavy rain days and travel-disrupting weather are more common in those two months.
If you travel in September or October, buy a travel insurance policy that covers hurricane cancellation and evacuation. Otherwise there is no reason to avoid the entire season — June, July and early August are popular family months for good reason.
